Appreciating Our Own Filters

Lesson 11 Appreciating Our Own Filters

Every leader operates through a set of filters. These filters influence what we notice, what we value, the decisions we make, and ultimately the expectations we set for others.

There isn’t just one set of expectations inside an organisation. Every organisation has its own purpose and culture. Every team develops its own way of working. Every individual brings their own experiences, values and motivations.

The diagram below illustrates this idea. The organisation provides the broader direction. Teams create their own culture within that environment. As a leader, you play a significant role in shaping that culture. Your own purpose, values and vision become part of the expectations your team experiences every day.

That’s why before we think about leading others, it’s worth understanding ourselves.
