Lesson 14 We Are the Culture
Most organisations have values displayed on a wall or website.
The real question isn't whether people agree with those values. The question is whether the everyday behaviours and conditions within the team allow those values to come to life.
Gallup research reinforces this challenge. Only 27% of employees strongly agree they believe in their organisation's values, and only 23% strongly agree they know how to apply those values in their work every day.
As leaders, we have an opportunity to change that.
Every conversation we have, every decision we make and every interaction with our team either strengthens or weakens the culture we are trying to create.
Our CliftonStrengths help us understand how we naturally contribute to that culture. Each strength brings something valuable, but every strength also has needs. When those needs are met, our strengths help bring organisational values to life. When they aren't, those same values often struggle to show up.
Culture isn't created by posters, values statements or strategy documents.
It is created by the behaviours people experience every day.
Activity
Go to Page 17 of your Blue Workbook.
If your organisation has published values, choose one organisational value that you would most like to be known for demonstrating through your leadership.
If your organisation doesn't have published values, think about the kind of culture you would like your team to experience. Based on the values exercise you completed in Lesson 11, choose one value from the full list that best reflects that culture. You can access the list of values here.
Work through each question on the page:
Which organisational value would you most like to be known for demonstrating?
Which of your Top 5 CliftonStrengths could best support this value? Refer to White Workbook, Page 9 your and the I Bring column.
Which words or phrases from your strengths definitions best describe how you naturally demonstrate this value?
Think of a time when you felt proud to work for your organisation because you saw this value in action.
Find, draw or describe an image that best represents this value.
What is one action you will take to help create the conditions for this value to come to life every day where you work?
Share your completed page with your manager during your next 1:1 or use it as part of your next Setting Expectations conversation.
