What We Mean by Team Health

Lesson 2 What We Mean by Team Health

The Team Health Check focuses on how work is experienced day to day.  Rather than measuring attitudes or motivation, it looks at the practical conditions that shape whether people can do good work, sustainably.

When team health is strong, people tend to:

  • Show up with energy and focus

  • Perform more consistently

  • Solve problems and improve how work gets done

Research by Gallup shows that teams with stronger workplace conditions consistently outperform those without. Improvements show up not only in how people feel at work, but in retention, safety, quality, and productivity.

At its core, team health is about care.  Do people care about their work, each other, and the outcome for customers?  When I go into any new workplace, there are three things that tell me how healthy a culture is

  • How good the welcome is at reception

  • How much laughing there is in the corridors

  • How tidy the kitchen is

These signals are not proof, but they are clues about how people experience the environment.

Optional reflection Think about times when work felt healthy and sustainable for you:

  • What words would you use to describe your best days at work?

  • What is it that makes these days different for you?

  • How do you feel on these best days at work?

Optional watch A short overview of why focusing on team health and working conditions has a direct impact on performance:
