Identifying Where to Focus

Lesson 15 Identifying Where to Focus

Team health is shaped at the team level.

This means the discussion with your team is the most important part of the process.  The goal of the debrief is not to present results.  The goal is to help the team interpret the results together and decide where to focus.

  1. Share the Dashboard Report with your team

  2. Briefly explain how to read it.  Key points to explain

    • The results are a snapshot in time based on how the team experienced work when the survey was completed.

    • Each score shows the percentage of positive responses (Agree + Strongly Agree) for that question.

    • Higher percentages suggest that the underlying workplace need is being met more consistently. Lower percentages indicate an area that may need attention.

    • The questions follow a hierarchy. Pay close attention to the first six questions (Basic Needs and Individual Needs), as these form the foundation for enjoying your work.

    • The colour-coded boxes highlight relative position within your team’s results, with green showing stronger items and red showing the lowest items.

    • The “Previous Team Results” column shows how results have changed since the previous survey, where data is available.

    • The comparison columns provide context by showing how your team compares with:

      •   the wider organisation

      •   all organisations using the Team Health Check

These comparisons are reference points to inform discussion, not targets to chase.

Download the Team Health Results Review template to capture the outcomes from the discussion or use post it notes.

Discussion questions for the team

  • Do any of these results surprise you?

  • Which area appears to be working well for our team?

  • What are we doing that might be contributing to these strong results?

  • Which area may need more attention from us as a team?

  • What might be contributing to those results?

  • Which question should we focus on improving together?

Ways to encourage discussion

Think / Pair / Share

  1. Give everyone a minute to think about their response.

  2. Ask them to discuss their thoughts with one partner.

  3. Invite pairs to share what they discussed with the group.

Post‑it notes
Ask people to capture ideas on Post‑it notes. This separates the idea from the person and helps create psychological safety.

Leverage preferential voting to prioritise ideas:

  • Each person receives six votes

  • Three votes for their top idea

  • Two votes for their second idea

  • One vote for their third idea

The ideas with the highest score become the focus.
