Lesson 9 Using the Focus First Report
This report helps identify where leadership attention will have the greatest impact. It compares the foundational elements of work with the higher‑order experiences of teamwork and growth.
What this report shows
Two grouped scores:
Foundations the basics required for people to do their job well
Team & Growth experiences that build energy, commitment, and development
When Foundations are weak, they often limit progress in the Team & Growth areas.
Whether Foundations score lower than Team & Growth
Whether the team may be trying to solve higher‑order issues while the basics remain unstable
What to look for
Activity Identifying the best place to focus
Start with the Leadership Insight Summary. Find the section “Focus First Report Review”. This highlights where leadership attention is likely to have the greatest impact.
Return to the Focus First report. Look at:
The Foundations score
The Team & Growth score
The gap between the two
This comparison helps determine where attention should go first.
If Foundations are lower than Team & Growth, the team may be relying on goodwill and relationships to carry performance. Strengthening the basics of work should be the priority.
If Team & Growth are lower than Foundations, the basics of work may be in place but energy, connection, or ownership in the team may need attention.
In most cases, focus first on strengthening Foundations before trying to improve higher-level team or growth factors.
Capture one working assumption. Complete the sentence: “The area where leadership attention may have the greatest impact is…” Note in your Leadership Insight Summary under the heading Overall Review
